Today we are switching gears to some happier-sounding music. Today's tango is a Waltz (oups!): "Lejos de Ti" (Far from You), interpreted by Rodolfo Biagi with the voice of Teofilo Ibanez in 1938. Biagi is a very interesting pianist. He got his first big break with D'Arienzo when D'Arienzo's preceding pianist (Fasoli) showed up late for a gig one too many times... The new sound Biagi brought to D'Arienzo's orchestra changed tango overnight. But as good things must come to an end, D'Arienzo fired Biagi in early 1938 after Biagi (reluctantly) took a bow at the end of a performance... D'Arienzo immediately came to him and said "There is only one star in this orchestra: me! You are fired!" So goes tango...

Tango of the Day VI
Hello everyone,
Today's tango is a classic from the orchestra of Angel D'Agostino (with emblematic singer Angel Vargas): "Traiga Otra Cana", which translates into "Bring another Strong Drink". You are very likely to hear this tango in the milongas of Buenos Aires, since the D'Agostino-Vargas duet is very dear to porteno milongueros. This version was recorded in 1941.

Tango of the Day V
Today we conclude our tour of the "big 4" orchestras with Osvaldo Pugliese. Now, Pugliese is a little controversial in traditional milongas because several DJs find his music too hard to dance to. Though that can definitely said of many tangos he recorded after 1952, there are quite a few danceable gems in his repertoire. Today's tango is "Malandraca", one of his own compositions (recorded in 1949). You can definitely hear the "Yumba" sound in this one. It's one of my personal favourites.

Tango of the Day IV
A big welcome to Buenos Aires for Gabriel and others today.
Today, we are going back to the "big 4" orchestras with a tango from Anibal Troilo. For a change, I am picking an instrumental tango tonight. "El Tamango" was recorded in 1941 and is typical of Troilo's early staccato style. He is also known for changing his musical style throughout his career. Like Pugliese and Piazzolla, Troilo was constantly innovating. Speaking of Piazzolla, Astor got his first big break with the orchestra of.... that's right, Troilo...

Tango of the Day III

Today I was going to talk about another of the "big 4" orchestras, but I thought better of it... I have had this tango stuck in my head all day and thought I would share it with you. It's for a special someone currently in Bs As... You know who you are...
The tango is "Vendras Alguna Vez" by Enrique Rodriguez with singer Roberto Flores. The title means "You'll Come back Someday". You can get the recording from the IStore (search for "Vendras Algunas Vez", it's the very first one that comes up). Recorded all the way back in 1938, it's a great example of the early Rodriguez sound - a sound that "carries" as I like to say. I generally play this type of music early in a milonga.
This is in contrast with the slower but more well-known tangos Rodriguez later recorded with the famous Alberto Moreno. I prefer to play Rodriguez-Moreno towards the end of a milonga because it's slower and more "calm".

Tango of the Day II
Here is the tango for today: “Mañana Zarpa un Barco” interpreted by Carlo Di Sarli’s orchestra with the voice of Roberto Rufino in 1942. Di Sarli is the second of the “big 4” of tango (the others are D’Arienzo, Troilo, and Pugliese). One of the major contributions of Di Sarli was to considerably slow down the pace of tangos. This occurred starting in 1942 and “Mañana Zarpa un Barco” is a perfect example of this.

Tango of the Day..
I have some friends currently in Buenos Aires and they like to learn about tango music. So in honour of their pilgrimage, I decided to send them one tango per day for the duration of their trip. I figured others might also be interested... So here we go with the first one: No Mientas, performed by the orchestra of Juan D’Arienzo. The singer is Alberto Echague and this tango was recorded in 1938. You are likely to hear this tango at one point or another at the milongas. It is very rhythmical. Portenos love this stuff. In traditional milongas in Bs As, you can even expect to hear D'Arienzo's orchestra once per hour!

By the way, D’Arienzo was 72 in these videos (1972-1973).
As you will see on the videos, D’Arienzo is definitely an entertainer… He recorded over 1000 singles over a 45+ year recording career. He was extremely popular, and remains popular to this day in Tango circles. He recorded the first Argentinian single to sell over 1 million copies (La Punalada).
D’Arienzo never toured outside South America (he was scared of flying on airplanes), but in the early 1970s, he was invited to perform in Japan (by the Showa Emperor himself). D’Arienzo sent his soloists to tour Japan without him. Many recordings of this tour still exist today.
Notice that his orchestra has 5 bandoneons, 5 violins, 1 piano, and 1 bass. The piano and the bass give the beat, so there is only one of each. The violins and bandoneons give “depth” to the music, so there are more of them.

The most Underrated Tango Orquesta in Milongas...
Hello everyone,
There are orquestas I would like to hear (or play) more often in milongas. Of course, we hear plenty of D'Arienzo, Tanturi, Di Sarli, etc. But what about tango bands that did good music and are (almost) never played in milongas? In my opinion, the most underrated tango orquesta is that of Julio De Caro. This choice will probably surprise a few, so let me explain... Julio De Caro is generally regarded as the founder of the "de Carean" school of tango. He is mostly responsible for the revolution of tango music aesthetics of the late 1920's. However, his discography is largely considered "un-danceable". While I agree that over 90% his music is somewhere between tough to dance to and un-danceable, let me point out that much like other tango orquestas, De Caro's went through several phases. Listening to his discography, I can discern at least four distinct period:

- From about 1935 until about 1940: after telling D'Arienzo that his new style would not last (a comment that D'Arienzo never forgave him for), De Caro was eventually forced to realize that times had changed... and he embraced some of the D'Arienzist elements. He recorded several gems in that timeframe (more on this later).
- 1940-1943: De Caro slows the music down and it is difficult to dance it.
- 1949-1953: De Caro comes out of retirement to record a few more pieces. There are few more beautiful songs from that time.
Out of these four periods, I enjoy his music from the second and the fourth. From the second period, I have a great tanda of milongas:
- De Contrapunto (De Caro) - 1936
- Saca Chispas (De Caro/Diaz) - 1938
- No Hay Tierra como la Mia (De Caro/Farrel) - 1939
From the fourth period, I have the following tanda which usually works well at the end of a long milonga:
- Anibal Troilo (De Caro) - 1949
- Recuerdo (De Caro) - 1952
- El Arranque (De Caro) - 1951

Solving the "Poema" Enigma...
In late January, I had the great pleasure to be at the Garua milonga in Seattle. One of my DJ friends asked me how to build a good tanda around Poema, the masterpiece interpreted by Francisco Canaro and Roberto Maida in 1935. It's a tough one because Poema is one of these instantly recognizable tangos that gets everybody off their chair and on the dance floor. You have to be careful because if you start a tanda with a masterpiece like this one, you better be able to deliver two or three strong tangos right after. Otherwise, a few dancers might sit after just one (yikes!). Here is my solution to the problem:
1. Poema (Canaro/Maida) - 1935
2. Invierno (Canaro/Maida) - 1937
3. Copos de Nieve (Canaro/Maida) - 1937
4. Todo Corazon (Canaro) - 1936
In this tanda, I am mixing three songs with one instrumental, which is fine. In addition, all tangos have similar speeds (around 120 beats per minute), are from the same era, and have the same "feeling". I have used this little gem many a time at the end of an evening with a lot of success. Try it and tell me how it goes for you.
